When Fashion Design Becomes Magical

My niece Katie spent an afternoon with me. On our way to my house I asked her if she wanted to color or watch a movie. She said, "I'll just wait and see what you've got." We arrived at my house. She went into my studio and was stunned at my amount of fabric. She particularly liked that it was organized by color. She went straight to the purple section and asked why I didn't have more purple.

She asked me if I would make a dress for her. I told her to draw a picture of what she wanted, so she came up with this. She clarified a few things I didn't understand, then her number one request for this piece was,
"Don't make it itchy. I can't wear an itchy dress."

I took her measurements and started drafting a pattern for her. She got excited and wanted to take over, just with a little direction. Once she had the pattern cut out, she said,
"This is just like Barbie in a Fashion Fairy Tale!"

After a lot of hard work on Katie's part, and a zipper installation from me, her dress was finished!

"This is pretty good for a seven-year-old."

Looks like you may have another talented sewist in the family. Its just brilliant that she has a patient aunt who enjoys spending quality time with her. I LOVE the pictures of her concentrating really hard, and she looks so proud of herself in her modelling shots.

    This. is. so. ADORABLE.
Oh my gosh your niece is an inspiration <3 it reminds me of the real innocence, fun and creativity that fashion design is, something that often gets lost in our mass-produced consumer world.
